The Southern Africa Teaching Ministry was formally started in August 2019 with the appointment of five teachers. Two of these teachers have since emigrated, and one more teacher was appointed in September 2022. The profiles of the four current teachers are provided on this website.

Our vision is to ensure that all disciples in Southern Africa are empowered to correctly read, interpret and apply the Word of God. We wish to imitate Jesus in how he taught his disciples and then sent them out to make disciples who were able to teach others (Matthew 28:18-20). 

We undertake to collaborate with church leaders to build up the body of Christ in our region, working as a united team (Ephesians 4:12). We ultimately share God’s desire for all disciples to grow and become more like Jesus (Romans 8:29).

We operate in both a responsive and proactive mode:  

1. We invite leaders and other disciples to reach out to us and share what you experience as teaching needs in your church. We will then work with you to address the needs in the most appropriate way.  
2. We study deeply and network widely to be aware of emerging developments in theology as well as challenges facing our churches. We are willing to use these insights to proactively teach on current and emerging issues to help prevent confusion and division.
   
   

Our teaching interventions can therefore vary greatly, from providing Bible-based advice to individual disciples, training church leadership groups, facilitating church wide interventions and hosting Southern Africa wide teaching events.

We are willing to share our views on topics of concern and interest, but we also recognize the complexity of many issues facing the church. This requires humility from both us and those who engage with us, as well as a willingness to distinguish between doctrine “written in the blood of Jesus” and matters which are disputable and/or local (Romans 14:1).

Another role of ours is to work with church leaders to identify and equip potential teachers. We are committed to ensuring that such a teaching pipeline recognizes the cultural, generational and gender diversity of the churches in Southern Africa.  

Currently, our ongoing formal teaching offerings are the Ministry Training Academy (MTA) and the academic programme of the Southern Africa School of Missions (SASM). We also put together teaching material for individual churches to use, often starting with our own local church communities.
